Our Vision
Notre Dame Education Center, founded by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, is a place of hope.
We envision a world where all people have access to the education and support services they need.
Students will acquire skills that empower them as citizens, as family members, and as participants
in the workforce as well as in the community. A life-long love of learning and a deeper appreciation
for the value of education encourage reflection on personal experiences and the experiences of others.
Carrying these values with them, students will act with hope to improve the quality of life for
themselves, their families, and their communities.
Our Mission
Our Mission Our mission is to provide quality education and support services in a diverse caring
community that empowers adult learners to realize their full potential.
Our History
In 1860, seven Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur arrived at 50 West Broadway in South Boston. The
founding Sisters went out and rang a bell telling everyone that a new school, a free school,
would open in September. Twelve hundred students showed up for classes. The Sisters taught
morning, afternoon and evening classes. Since then, the Sisters have continued their educational
mission in the city and in 1992, when Cardinal Cushing High School in South Boston closed its
doors, the Sisters chose to establish a comprehensive adult educational center now known
as "NDEC" or Notre Dame Education Center. The Center continues to provide instruction to
adults during the morning, afternoon and evening.
Today at NDEC, immigrants who come from all over the world and other adult learners have
the opportunity to rebuild their lives as they develop confidence in their ability to
communicate in English and further their education.
